Jesus is the Son of God.
Matthew 26:6364 (NIV) The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Christ, the Son of God.” 64 “Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.
While Jesus is the Son of God, it does not mean that God the Father has a wife who conceives Jesus. It does not even mean the Jesus was created at one point of time by the Father. The Bible is clear that Jesus has existed from eternity past.
John 1:1 (NIV) In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God……14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the One and Only, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Then why was Jesus called the Son of God? It is possible that Jesus was called the Son because of His exact representation of the Father, very much like our modern saying, “like father, like son”.
John 14:9 (NIV) Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’?
Hebrews 1:3 (NIV) The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word.
Jesus is therefore truly God….
Philippians 2:56 (NIV) Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,
……but also truly man.
John 8:40 (NIV) As it is, you are determined to kill me, a man who has told you the truth that I heard from God. Abraham did not do such things.
It is necessary for Christ to come as a man in order to save us.
Hebrews 2:1418 (NIV) Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of deaththat is, the devil 15 and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death….. 17 For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18 Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.
Only a man without sin may be able to redeem us from our sins.
1 John 3:5 (NIV) But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin.
1 Peter 1:1819 (NIV) For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your forefathers, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect.
Jesus taught that His mission on earth was to die for our sins and be raised again from the dead.
Matthew 16:21 (NIV) From that time on Jesus began to explain to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and on the third day be raised to life.
By being raised from the dead, Christ proved that He has conquered death.
Romans 6:9 (NIV) For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him.
By being raised from the dead, Christ substantiated His claims and proves that He is indeed God and has mastery over even death.
1 Corinthians 15:17 (NIV) And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins.
