How to be a good servant of God

Get rid of distractions in life

2Ti 2:4  A soldier on active duty wants to please his commanding officer and so does not get mixed up in the affairs of civilian life.

Many people say that they are too busy to serve God because they have too many things to do in life. We are created to serve God. If we are too busy, we are TOO busy. We need to cut down on our activities so that we can concentrate on one of our main objectives in life – to serve God.

Look for opportunities to serve God

Gal 6:10  So then, as often as we have the chance, we should do good to everyone, and especially to those who belong to our family in the faith.

We serve God also by serving our fellow man. And we are asked to do so as often as we have the chance. That means an active server is an active seeker for ways that he can serve God and others.

Do not wait for perfect conditions

Ecc 11:4  If you wait until the wind and the weather are just right, you will never plant anything and never harvest anything.

Some people will say that they are not ready to serve God until they get everything right and learn all there is to learn about that ministry. If we have this mindset, we will never serve God because it is not realistic to expect perfect conditions. Furthermore, when we start to get into the “job”, we start to learn many things that we would not even have thought of before we began.

Serve the Lord wholeheartedly in whatever we do

Col 3:23  Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as though you were working for the Lord and not for people.

It is not about the task; it is about whom we serve. Even though the task may be menial, it is not because we are serving the Lord. If we think that a task is menial, we will not put our whole heart and mind into it. But when we recognize its importance we are able to serve wholeheartedly.

God sometimes gives us small tasks to perform to test our faithfulness before He will give us big tasks. Isn’t this similar in our secular work? A fresh graduate does not start his work life as President of a company. He starts off as a junior Officer and works his way up after he has proven himself to be faithful.

Mat 25:23  ‘Well done, you good and faithful servant!’ said his master. ‘You have been faithful in managing small amounts, so I will put you in charge of large amounts. Come on in and share my happiness!’

Serve the Lord wholeheartedly even when nobody is watching.

Ephesians 6:5-6  Slaves, obey your human masters with fear and trembling; and do it with a sincere heart, as though you were serving Christ.  (6)  Do this not only when they are watching you, because you want to gain their approval; but with all your heart do what God wants, as slaves of Christ.

Mat 6:1  “Make certain you do not perform your religious duties in public so that people will see what you do. If you do these things publicly, you will not have any reward from your Father in heaven.
